In line with the ongoing 1999 Constitution Amendment, over 100 Bills have so far scaled second reading in the House of Representatives this week.
These Bills are in segments such as Devolution of Power, Strengthening of Institutions, State Creation,Local Government ,Judicial Reforms, Electoral Matters, Traditional Institutions, Citizenship, Fundamental Rights & Objectives, Legislature amongst others.
Among the proposed amendments, one bill seeks to make the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC) mandatory for the removal of Heads of Nigerian courts.
In the area of legislative reforms, another bill proposes empowering the Chief Justice of Nigeria to issue a proclamation for the inauguration of a new National Assembly.
Security reforms are also in focus, with the House approving the second reading of a bill that seeks to establish State Police and Local Government Police.
Other bills which scaled second reading in the House but were rescinded a day after include the removal of immunity clause for the Vice President and Deputy Governors of States and the Bill on Capital Punishment.
The House Leader, Hon. Julius Ihonvbare made this known on the floor when the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu who presided the plenary gave him the floor to Speak.
Also stepped down by the House is the Bill to make provision to allow National Assembly and State Assemblies to summon the President or Governors respectively.
While other bills listed for the day were referred to the Constitution Review Committee, which states that candidate above sixty years can not contest for President or Governorship as well as their qualifications of not less than degree holders were deliberated and referred to the Constitution Review committee.
With this development, it is expected that public hearing will be organised by the National Assembly where stakeholders will be invited to dissect on the bills and report will be submitted to both chambers of National Assembly for consideration.
The House has therefore adjourned till April the 29th for the celebration of Salah and Easter by the uslim and Christian faithfuls in the House.
