The Senate has expressed disappointment over recent remarks by the Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, describing the proposed Senate-led national security summit as unnecessary.
Speaking during a ministerial briefing in Abuja, Badaru stated that a well-thought-out security strategy would serve the country better than the summit
Reacting on the Senate floor, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele criticised the minister’s comments, calling them “unfortunate and surprising.”
He emphasized that it is the firm resolution of the Senate to convene the national security summit in the interest of national stability.
Bamidele stated that If the Minister of Defence considers a national security summit by elected representatives of the people unnecessary, then he can understand why previous security summits failed to yield results
He added that the Senate remains committed to the summit and will proceed as planned, assuring that the Minister will be invited alongside other key stakeholders.
Bamidele advised that the minister should be willing and eager to attend,
Senate President Godswill Akpabio also weighed in, advising that if the Minister has objections to any Senate resolution, he should communicate through proper legislative channels rather than making public dismissals.
Akpbio says the senate will look into the matter, at the appropriate time
