The House of Representatives Committee on Solid Mineral has called for the suspension of Arab Contractors mining operations in the country till suitable site is provided by the company.
Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Jonathan Gbefwi gave the ruling in Abuja during an investigative hearing on mining companies operating in Nigeria and their community development agreements.
Hon. Gbefwi expressed worries that the blasting site of Arab Contractors company is very close to residential areas which contravenes the Act.
The committee also ruled that the operations of HOMASET company be suspended for two weeks until they provide all relevant agreement document between the company, host community and the Federal government.
The Hon. Gbefwi led committee further warned that if the company failed to provide these document, their licence will be withdrawn by the Ministry of Solid Mineral because they are currently operating illegally.
HOMASET company representative however pleaded with the committee to avail them more days to provide all relevant documents requested by the committee.
Director of Mines and Environmental Compliance, Dr. Vivian Okono while at the hearing said most of the companies are not complying with the community development agreement and even when invited to a meeting to explain the reason not all complied.
Earlier, the committee revealed that its investigative hearing is nationwide but it is starting with the Federal Capital Territory.
