Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has condemned the Nigerian Senate for prioritizing its standing orders over the Constitution in addressing the sexual harassment allegations raised by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Ezekwesili described the Senate’s actions, including Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension, as a gross degradation of constitutional principles and an abuse of power.
The Former Minister also clashed with Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi during a heated Ethics Committee hearing, where Nwebonyi insulted her while she stood in solidarity with Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The controversy has sparked widespread criticism, with many calling for justice and accountability in the handling of the case.
In a brief interview with journalists after the session, Ezekwesili called for a transparent investigation into the allegations and criticized the institution’s suppression of whistleblowers under Senate rules.
