Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen has inaugurated a 21 member adhoc committee on Rivers State oversight in line with the state of emergency declaration by President Bola Tinubu on 18th of March 2025.
Delivering his remarks during the inauguration, Speaker Abbas reiterated that the task before the Committee is not routine; it is a mission of national significance that will serve as a litmus test for the 10th assembly’s commitment to democratic principles and constitutional governance.
He said the importance of the assignment places a considerable burden on the Chairman and all members, as every action taken will be subject to national scrutiny.
He therefore charged the ad-hoc committee to approach the assignment with the highest standards of professionalism, impartiality, and diligence
On his part, Chairman of the adhoc committee, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere acknowledged that the Speaker has clearly spelt out what is expected of the Committee.
While noting that the adhoc committee is the strongest so far set up since 2019, Hon. Ihonvbere assured that his led committee will not disappoint the Speaker, National Assembly and the country in general.
Recall that in response to the President’s declaration and in accordance with the national assembly’s constitutional duty, the official Gazette of the State of Emergency was duly transmitted to both the House and Senate. On 20th March 2025, the chambers deliberated extensively and approved the President’s request with significant amendments designed to reinforce democratic safeguards and ensure robust oversight.
